Welcome to Discover Shikoku's 2019 Japan Photography Tour. 11 days/10 nights in Japan’s most spectacular landscapes and photogenic regions.  Overnight in a cleverly converted newspaper headquarters in Tokyo, a sacred mountain top temple, and luxury ryokans. Join the madness of Tokyo's rail commute, whip across the countryside at 270km/hr on the legendary shinkansen, rest easy in a private luxury van, and sip champagne aboard a chartered catamaran yacht. We travel in style! Join your host Sean Brecht, a professional photographer who has spent more than 30 years photographing Japan, for this epic tour of one the world’s most iconic destinations.

May 27 (Monday) - Tokyo

12:00 - 16:00  Orientation in the lobby of Hyatt Centric Hotel in Tokyo's Ginza district. This first afternoon will be about getting everyone checked in and settled. We'll embark on an early evening stroll and dinner in the chic Ginza-Marunouchi district and enjoy an evening photo walk around the iconic Tokyo station, the fabulous Tokyo International Forum, and night cityscapes.  [Moderate/Heavy Walking]

May 28 (Tuesday) - Tokyo

Our first full day begins with an optional early morning pre-breakfast trip out to Shinjuku station (the world’s busiest train station) to photograph the maddening morning commute.  After breakfast, we'll pack in a full day of photography including visits to Meiji Shrine, Takeshita street,  Sensōji temple in Asakusa, and some optional night shooting of Shinjuku's red-light district of Kabukicho or Shibuya's famed scramble crossing.  [Heavy Walking]

May 29 (Wednesday) - Kamakura

A day trip to Japan’s exquisite former capital, a seaside town that was Japan’s most populous in the 13th century, is home to the Daibutsu (Great Buddha), and a collection of some of Japan’s most impressive and best-preserved temples and shrines; a true photographer’s paradise. [Heavy Walking]

May 30-31 (Thursday/Friday) - Koyasan

We'll depart in the morning for Tokyo station to board the Shinkansen for the city of Osaka where we will be meeting our driver(s) for the journey down to the sacred Mt. Koya, center of Shingon Buddhism, introduced to Japan in 805 by the priest Kobo Daishi. Known for its towering old growth forests and centuries-old temples and graveyards, its mystical otherworldly qualities are a photographer’s dream. June 01 (Saturday) - Tokushima

An early morning departure has us traveling across the Seto Inland Sea to the Island of Shikoku and two magnificent mountaintop pilgrimage temples, Tairyuji and Shousanji. In the late afternoon, we'll arrive at the beautiful Asan Kotonami Ryokan where each room comes with a private natural hot spring bath on the balcony.  [Moderate Walking]

June 02 (Sunday) - Teshima Island

A special treat awaits you today as you depart in the morning for Takamatsu Port to board a private luxury catamaran yacht for a sail across the Seto Inland Sea to the lovely art island of Teshima where you will board electric assist bicycles and cycle off to a couple of Art House Projects and enjoy a seaside lunch with amazing views. Then it's off to the Teshima Art Museum—the MOST transformative art experience of your lifetime. Enjoy dinner at a local island restaurant and a catered breakfast in the morning.  [Light Walking / Moderate Cycling]

June 03 (Monday) - Kurashiki

A short boat ride from Teshima takes you to Uno Port back on Japan’s main island of Honshu with a short drive to the beautifully preserved merchant town of Kurashiki. Composed of traditional warehouses dating back 300+ years, the lovely Bikan District is a true national treasure. Stroll the canals in your yukata (summer kimonos) with cameras in hand and be instantly transported back in time.  [Light Walking]

June 04 (Tuesday) - Miyajima

Today we journey down to Miyajima, The Island Where Gods Dwell, and the venerable Itsukushima shrine standing in the bay. At low tide we will venture out to the Torii gate, an excellent spot for photography and home to some of Japan’s best sunsets. [Moderate Walking]

June 05 (Wednesday) - Hiroshima

Our last full day together will be in Hiroshima and its poignant Peace Memorial Park, Atomic bomb Dome, and memorial museum. We will have an afternoon tour of the town and the option to attend a professional baseball game in the hometown of the Hiroshima Carp. [Light Walking]

June 06 (Thursday) - Departure

We will be taking everyone to Hiroshima airport for the morning flight back to Tokyo, which is included in your photography tour package. (Or Hiroshima Station for those extending their trip.)


Kyoto Extension

Travel Insurance: Each participant hereby confirms that they understand and agree to purchase the required insurance listed below, that is valid internationally, and that they will be required to provide proof prior to departure for the Trip and in order to participate.

We strongly urge you to evaluate your risk and to take out travel insurance that covers the full value of the Trip and personal effects in the case of Trip cancellation, loss or theft of baggage, and emergency evacuation. Discover Shikoku, our owners, agents and subsidiaries will not be held responsible for these expenses. It is vital for you to realize that if you experience a delay or find it necessary to cancel or cut short the Trip for any reason, you will lose part or the entire sum of the amount paid (see the section “Deposits, Payments, Cancellations and Refunds” in the terms and conditions above).

Travel insurance helps to minimize the risk of monetary losses you would incur in the event of a delay of your departure due to weather, airline strike, missed connection, etc., your inability to travel for reasons such as illness, injury, unforeseen financial complications and other personal circumstances, or if you were required to cut the Trip short for medical or any other reasons.


Enrollment Details

The enrollment fee is per person / double occupancy (ryokans and island houses may sleep multiple occupants) and includes 3 meals daily (May 27 dinner only / June 05 breakfast only). Single occupancy available at additional cost. (Please note that single occupancy may not be available in all locations).

Enrollment fee does not include international travel costs to/from Japan or domestic travel inbound to the city of Tokyo (Hyatt Centric Hotel).  


This tour has a required minimum enrollment of 6 participants and a maximum enrollment of 10 to assure high quality. If the minimum enrollment has not been met by April 01 2019 the tour will be cancelled and all deposits will be refunded in full within 30 calendar days.


A 50% Deposit is due at time of registration.

The remaining balance is due in full on April 10 2019.

Proof of travel insurance (minimum coverage stated below) is required no later than May 1, 2019.
