The 5 Night Spiritual Ohenro Pilgrimage
This tour will have your clients arriving in Takamatsu either by air or rail and traveling directly by private car to the base of Gokenzan mountain where they will board the wonderfully retro cable car to the mountain top temple of Yakuriji (85). Here they will receive a light orientation into the sublime rituals of the Ohenro pilgrimage. Once the orientation and tour of the temple complex is complete we will travel back to Takamatsu for a lovely dinner of Japanese influenced fusion cuisine at 'Hachi'. Your guests will overnight at the Asan Kotonami ryokan with its stunning mountain vistas and en-suite balcony onsen baths.
The second day of this tour will start with a morning departure for the mid-point of the Ohenro trail between #11 Fujiidera temple and number #12 Shousanji temple, widely regarded as one of the pilgrimages toughest treks. We will then embark upon a roughly three hour hike up to the mountain top temple of Shousanji. The day will end in the gorgeous Iya Valley, where guests will spend the night in a beautifully renovated thatched-roof farmhouse in Ochiai village, Tougenkyo where local village women will come in and prepare a delicious meal with produce sourced from their own gardens.
The third day starts with the cliff-hugging descent to the epic riverside onsen at the Iya Onsen hotel for a morning dip followed by a drive to Unpenji (#66), the highest of all the pilgrimage temples with its dramatic cable car ride to the top. Traveling on then to the foot of Konpira shrine for an overnight stay in one of the century old estate houses of Kotohira Kadan ryokan.
On the fourth day your clients will enjoy ascending the 756 steps of the Nakasendo shopping street to the main hall of one of Japans most venerated shrines. After a hearty lunch we will drive to Ehime prefecture and the stunningly well preserved town of Uchiko, famous for its fabulous architecture. Clients will overnight in the outstanding floating washi pavilions of Auberge Uchiko.
The last full day of this trip will have your clients experiencing the wonders of Matsuyama including its famous castle, the venerated Dogo onsen (Japan's oldest), and Ishiteji temple #51, one of Japan's most eclectic places of worship and reflection. The following morning your guests will be escorted to either Matsuyama airport or rail station as per their overall itineraries.
